Secondary Storage devices- Their Importance and Types

Spread the love

Our computers have two types of storage devices. These are Primary Storage devices and Secondary storage devices. Primary strorage device are found in the internal of computer. Secondary storage device are mostly external devices. Examples of secondary storage devices are our external hard drives, Flash drive, Solid State drive, etc.  While primary storage devices are usually less expensive, secondary storage devices could cost a bit more. Most of these days is usually uncommon to found computer comes in 80Gb or 120 Gb. But should we really worry about the storage size of our PC. You can actually support your computer storage with a powerful external hard drive. Some external drives even come in TBs.

Secondary Storage Devices, Types of secondary storage and their importance

Five major importance of Secondary Storage Devices

  • They are very handy. One of the good importance of this devices is that they are easy to take about. Either you are going to the office or a business meeting event, you can easily put them in your jean pocket or inside your back pack.
  • Another major importance is that you can use them as backups. Files that you want to keep safe or keep for long time can be easily stored in your flash or external hard drve.
  • Secondary storage devices serve as extra storage mechanism to our device. No matter how you use PC, your flash or external HD added extra storage capacity to your PC.
  • Security, if there is a document of file you want to protect. You can stored them to your secondary storage device. Some of these devices even let you password them by enabling password protection.
  • Long term storage. Without secondary storage device like your HDD or SSD the moment you power off your PC you lose your files.

Types of Secondary Storage Devices

Magnetic Devices

Magnetic devices such as the traditional hard disk drive use a disk-spinning technic to store data. When the disk is spinning, there is a read/write head that moves across the surface. This read and write head is used to detect whether there is magnetization or demagnetization. To read dada the head needs to know if the section is magnetized and to write data the head magnetizes or demagnetizes a section of the disk that is spinning under it. Magnetic devices were the first major medium of storage for PCs. Apart from HDDs, another example of a Magnetic device is Magnetic Tape.

Optical Storage Device

This is another very common secondary storage device, examples include DVD-ROM, DVD-RW, CD-ROM, HD DVD, and Blue Ray.  They are called optical disks because they read or write data through light. You easily move with this type of storage device, because unlike HDDs, they are usually light weight. They are also very cheap.

Solid State Storage

SSDs uses non-volatile flash memory.  SSD was as a result of improvement to magnetic disks that uses magnetic medium to read or write data. This usually causes delay, and this delay varies on technology use in manufacturing a particular magnetic disk. SSDs are usually faster than HDDs, more expensive. And they generate less heat when compared to Magnetic disk.
