Nigerians we introduced forth this Fela masterpiece – ‘Sorrow Tears and Blood‘ which accommodates highly effective messages concerning the sorrowful incident.

Usually assumed to be impressed by the February 1977 military assault on the Kalakuta Republic, in line with sleeve designer Ghariokwu Lemi, “SorrowTearsAndBlood” was written in response to the South African regime’s crushing of the Soweto rebellion in June 1976, which Lemi and Fela had watched unfold on tv.

The album was among the many first of these Fela launched following the destruction of the Kalakuta Republic. An early sleeve design used {a photograph} displaying Fela onstage within the aftermath of the outrage, his left leg nonetheless in plaster. He devoted the album “to the reminiscence of those that have been crushed, raped, tortured or injured” through the Kalakuta assault.

The police and armed forces invariably depart behind them “sorrow, tears, and blood,” Fela sings, and the backing vocalists reply, “dem common trademark.” Decca refused to launch the album, fearing authorities reprisals. Fela responded by organizing Kalakuta Data and making the disc the label’s debut launch.
